Opened in December 2012, Ruzizi Tented Lodge is a welcome addition to Akagera National Park. Located in the park itself it has just 7 tents, and aims to be a simple, eco friendly lodge in a good position to explore the game of Akagera.

Expert Africa haven’t yet visited this lodge yet, but here is what we know about it from what we’ve been told:

The lodge is said to be located on the shores of Lake Ihema (which is Rwanda’s second largest lake). The main deck in the communal areas supposedly has lovely views of the lake which you can sit and enjoy. they have even put a fireplace out there to keep you warm on cool evenings.

The lodge is said to be entirely powered by solar, to leave minimum impact on the environment. The seven tents each has its own en-suite bathroom (which has hot running water), a dressing area and a queen sized, or two small double beds. Each tent also has a private patio at the front.

From this lodge you can explore the relatively unvisited Akagera National Park. Although this isn’t the place to come for top level guiding or great game, it makes a nice stop as part of a longer trip around Rwanda. Plains game such as impala, zebra and topi are commonly seen, as are crocodile and hippo. Hyena, jackal and leopard are supposedly present – although much more elusive!
